The game of baccarat is a centuries old favorite that is still enjoyed by many. It is a game of chance heavily influenced by the element of human unpredictability which makes it one of the most engaging non-strategy games around. Baccarat can be played at almost any casino and can be enjoyed in many different ways. The rules are a touch different depending on if you’re playing the “punto banco” (where the actions are pre-determined by the numbers on the cards) or “chemin de fer” (where the players involved can decide to take a third card) form of baccarat, but the principle is the same: Bet on a hand, Player or Banker, that has the highest value after all the cards are dealt. Nine is the best possible hand, and can’t lose. Which is why Mr. Bond does tend to end up with it so often.
How does baccarat work?
Baccarat is a game of chance and skill. That’s popular in casinos around the world. The goal of Baccarat is to make the hand you bet, whether player or banker, the best of the two hands. The score for the winning hand is the sum of all the points (points on the playing cards, i.e. clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades) to the nearest 9 in the last digit. The face value is zero and the ace counts as one. Do you have a face card and an 8? You don’t have 18, you have 8. Posted 3 and 4? Your score is 7. Sent 9 and 7? You have 16, so your score is 6. That’s it. That’s the whole game. The only complication is that each side gets a third card. A simple chart is used to show when the player or banker has a third card, which never happens when the player or banker has an 8 or 9 after the first two cards. This is called “natural”. But when that doesn’t happen, sometimes the player or banker needs to take a card.
Player
If a player’s hand is 0-5, they will draw a third card. 6 or 7, they stand. An 8 or a 9 is natural, even if the Player has an 8 and the Banker has a 9, the stands will work. This happens sometimes.
Banker
If the player has a 6 or higher, the dealer behaves like the player: draw a third card with 0-5, stand with a 6 or 7, and naturally an 8 or 9. However, if the player draws a third card, the dealer acts according to the following rules related to the score:
0, 1, 2: The dealer draws a card, regardless of the player’s third card.
3: The dealer draws a third card, unless the player’s third card is an 8.
4: If the player’s third card is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, the dealer draws the third card.
5: If the player’s third card is a 4, 5, 6 or 7, the dealer draws a third card.
6: If the player’s third card is a 6 or 7, the dealer draws a third card.
7: Bankers Station.
Keep in mind the advantages given to the dealer above, all winners who bet on the dealer will pay the dealer a 5% commission.
Bet on a tie
If the Player and Banker end the game with the same score, the game results in a draw. All player and banker bets will be refunded. This is the only payout bet on a tie, in all other cases they lose.
Odds
The best part about baccarat is that it has the lowest house edge of any game in the casino. Banker bets have a house edge of 1.06% (including 5% commission), while player bets are 1.24%. In casinos, tie bets are usually offered at 8-1, so the house edge is 9.5%. This is considered a very bad bet, so stay away.
