Five-card stud is actually a poker variant, which is one of the earliest types of poker games, originating during the American Civil War. In the 1965 classic movie The Cincinnati Kid, 5 stud is a game where the “kid” (Steve McQueen) plays against the “man”. But its popularity in its country of origin has declined as the game continues to be replaced by newer variants, such as Texas Hold’em. The relative obscurity of five-card stud continues to be further emphasized by the fact that it is not symbolized in Wsop.
How is it played?
In five-card stud, each player is dealt five face-down cards and a betting round is played. After the first round of betting, there is a “flop”, which is a common theme in poker. Three face-up community cards are placed in the center of the pot. Another round of betting follows. Then comes the “turn” or fourth public card placed after another round of betting. There is another round of betting, followed by the final “river” or fifth public card, with no actionable bets, as the showdown ensues and the remaining players show their cards for the second and final time.
Deals and Games
The deal starts with the player to the left of the dealer.
First:
The dealer gives each player one face-down card (the bottom card) and one face-up card. If you choose a “bring-in” bet, the player with the fewest face-up cards pays, and the betting continues as usual. The player who pays the carry-in bet can choose to exceed the minimum bet. If there is a tie on the low card, use the suit ranking to break the tie. Suits are usually listed in reverse alphabetical order. Clubs < Diamonds < Hearts < Spades
Second Street:
After face-down and face-up cards have been dealt, pass clockwise starting with the player with the best hand (highest card). The player either bets (a small amount) or folds. All bets are added to the bottom pool. The player who started the bet has the option to check if he did not bring in a bet.
Third Street:
Each remaining player (who did not fold in the previous hand) is dealt a second face-up card. The betting starts with the player with the best hand. A pair (highest rank) is the best hand, and if no player has a pair, the player with the two highest ranking cards begins betting. The player either bets (a small amount) or folds.
Fourth Street:
A third face-up card is dealt to the player. The player with the highest hand begins to bet. Threes > Pairs > High Card. Bets from fourth street are doubled.
Fifth Street:
The player’s last card is dealt face up. Another betting round follows, starting with the player with the highest hand as usual. Players can bet, raise and fold. When the betting ends, the dealer calls and the showdown begins. The remaining players flip all their cards face up. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot. Check out the Poker Hand Rankings page for a detailed description of the different hands and how they are ranked.
How much can I bet during a tournament?
In stud poker, the player is dealt a hand before being dealt. In most of these games, betting is played like a public card game, but in some versions there is no flop and betting begins with the first two cards dealt to each player. The purpose of these games is to allow players to make the best 5 cards with their own cards and the cards dealt to them.
